Hey guys. I need your help. I was told the first piece was a grooved axe and from 8000-1000 BC. It's 8" long and 6 " wide. Is this true and how do I find the value? The second piece i was told was a nutting stone and no date. It's 3" by 7" Any ideas? Where do you sell these? Thanks so much.

Nice finds Shelly, have to ask are you Man or woman? Your handle is a little confusing.

I just found an combo stone is what I call it, it was a digger, has nutting indent on it and is polished from using as a metate', anyway it has many ways to hold it comfortably in the hand, I may post some pics of it. Your stones are awesome.

one is an archaic period full grooved a fantastic axe
the other is a nutting stone, the elongated shape sat between thighs if worker was in a kneeling/siting position
and the hazelnuts and acorns were smashed, they smash acorns to get rid of tannin so they were good to dry out and store for winter food, and made into a meal, paste or mixed into broth

Agreed, Good ID! Love the stone axe! They date pretty far back from what I read, 8000-2000 bce from what I read.

Does anyone know where to sell these objects or would my best bet be to donate to a museum?

A museum can't really use them because they have been disturbed (and they probably have stored many examples). A local historical society might be very happy to have the for a display.

Is there a local native Nation nearby? They might be very appreciative you cared enough to "return" the artifacts. Our local Oneidas have a nice museum and history center.

If you become a charter member here then you may be able to sell them on here.

Welcome Shelly,
Your artifacts don't hold any great value.
The most value (other than to a native American tribe) is to the finder.
Donating them would be a noble thing to do.
Check over at the North American Indian Artifacts
They may be able to direct you as to where to donate or sell them.

Cool artifacts
Would love to find a few myself.

Shelly are you still out there? I am bringing up this thread because when I thought about it that axe MAN had to have been BIG and Stout to wield such a heavy stone perhaps a GIANT? Just Guessing and hopeful some of the experts or more knowledgable might weigh in?

Yes thanks Pepper, I did that with the PM on the wayback posts when I talked with her, she sold the thing on Ebay as I had pointed her there and if memory serves got $800 or so from it.

Off topic… I just saw the “Central Oregon “ under your name and was just wondering if the Three Sisters are a threat to your area.

Eruption or fire wise Dan? I run fire cats so if there is a super eruption I'll probably be under layers of ash fried to a crisp?
