Hey folks. I'm a new member here. Thanks for having me I got permission to dig on a Mississippi Plantation home (1857) in Jefferson County. There was a Civil War skirmish on property called "Battle Of the Cotton Bales". I found this piece of led, with a slight curvature to it with one end beveled.
It's approximately 3 inches long. I photographed it with a AAA battery next to it for size reference. Would love it if some of you more experienced diggers / relic hunters could give me your thoughts. I was told by a few people that it could POSSIBLY be lead bar used to melt to make bullets? Any validity to that? Thanks ya'll !

Lead was used for all kinds of things back then. It was easy to melt and work. Plumbing seals was one of the more common uses around a house site.

Welcome Brad from Texas

Lead takes a Very long time to corrode so relevant to the time period I can agree it used to making munitions on the battlefield.

1st - I noticed this was your very first post - so, Welcome Aboard Brad! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forum: Select Your Area.... for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country).

2nd - I moved ya from TODAY'S FINDS! over to WHAT IS IT? for more exposure.

Being that it is an old plantation, are there any old statues there that may be missing some lower parts?

Utility bar lead, I find them a lot on old barn sights. Used for civil war ammunition is kind of a hopeful long shot but you never know, it doesn’t look that old to me.
