Hello, need some help identifying all of these, I'm a collector, mostly of coins, but been always interested on learning about stones and minerals, which as you may suspect it's not that easy when you have 0 experiencie, well i moved to Texas recently and been hunting for coins with my metal detector and often I had something triggering the metal detector, but searched and searched and nothing, sometimes I would've spent 30 mins in 1 spot just to leave because I cleaned the wholes from beer cans and/or rocks and then after that no more signal, I started thinking that my metal detector was broken but then one day realized 1 rock was triggering it (not on the pictures I threw it away thinking it was a piece of metal) which triggered the MD, plus would stick to a magnet very hard, then after that day I started cleaning and looking to all the stones tht would or not trigger the MD and all these I've found, please need help identifying them and if they're worth to keep to start my collection. Thanks

Hi, and Welcome,

You've got a lot there.
Right off I can see some magnetite (usually metallic grey to black)

(top right)

and hematite (usually dark red to gray; may have "spongy" appearance)

(top center)

both of which would have been my first 2 guesses.

Not sure why the quartzy stuff would be magnetic; quartz is usually diamagnetic. Aside from minerals/rocks containing iron, some of them may contain nickel and/or cobalt, which can be mildly magnetic

Beyond that... I'm afraid it's been too many years (50+) since I hounded the rocks... But here's a lead...

Hope this helps

Hello, need some help identifying all of these...
tn_md.gif
1st - Welcome Aboard! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forum: Select Your Area.... and selecting location information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country)...

2nd - I moved ya from HELP! over to ROCKS/GEMS for more exposure.

As far as keeping or not keeping... :dontknow:
(A lot of variables)

Generally, if I collect something, I try to get the best specimen examples I can find. A really good specimen will supplant a poorer one. The question then becomes, "Is a poor specimen better than no specimen?"

Anything less than the best specimen I will either toss or keep for variety or to trade for something else.

Have you cataloged this stuff yet?
4. Catalog your collection. As early as possible, begin keeping a catalog or database of your specimens. At the very least, maintain a record which identifies each specimen by a unique name or number, its mineral and varietal names, the year mined, and locale details (including the mine name, as well as specifics such as depth of find or level). Including the price paid for purchased specimens, and any other details regarding their previous history or display can also be helpful in determining the value of your collection, in future.

The are mineral collecting clubs; if there are none near you, try geology and/or lapidary clubs.

Happy Holidays.
