Help identifying solid lead ball with metal plug

Found this in a river. Made of lead. 11lbs in weight, first thing that comes to mind is cannon ball because of metal plug, but I have no idea, didn't think they were ever made of lead.

It was found in a river that has always a dam since 1638, but was recently removed and the water drawn down. Also hopefully it's safe. Any help would be appreciated.

It could be an old cannon-ball weight for a fishing downrigger. The iron plug seems large though.

I was wondering about a downrigger weight because it was lead, but that metal plug being the size of a quarter got me thinking and questioning it

Thanks for the replies. After a bit of cleaning it looks to just be a lead wight of some kind. the metal goes through to the other side. 11 lbs is a bit heavy for the northeast to be a down rigger but who knows!!

Yup Exeter NH, it's on the seacoast. There was a dam on the river for centuries, when they removed it this summer I literally found hundreds of old bottles. So much to discover
