Found this in South Central Michigan about 10" in the ground. I think it is a heel to a child's shoe? Appears to have be 3 layers with two rows of tiny brass nails plus bigger nails. Want to know if there is a way to date this and verify it is a heel?
Probably late 1800's to early 1900's, I find similar ones from trash piles from that time. Sometimes complete shoes, I don't normally keep them though, old leather shoes get kind of gross.
The nails look square? Are heels still put on with square nails? If shoemakers switched to round nails that would help you date it, but I don't know much about shoe making. I'd agree with coinman judging by the look of it though
