I recently bought a 100+ year old single room school house in Tahoe National Forest. While digging to repair electrical conduit I found an old coin. The area was heavily populated by Chinese rail road construction workers during it's initial construction over Donner Pass.

I know the coin in Chinese, but does anyone have an idea of the currency denomination, era of mint or the script translation?

The coin seems to be made of five thinner coins compressed together.

Welcome to tnet.

That coin looks to be from the Qing Dynasty. It's called 康熙通宝 kangxi tongbao

康熙 kangxi also known as 圣祖 shengzu was emperor of the Qing Dynasty 清代 from (1662-1722)

Here is the wikipedia link about him

Here is a photo of a coin during his reign.

This wiki has info on kangxi coins. The coin you have was minted in jinan city shandong province.

On a side note, I have been to jinan and in the summer it is VERY hot weather there.

Happy treasure hunting.

Can we see a pic of the edge showing the five layers? You might have five coins. There seems to be some rust in the hole and they might be fused together by what is left of an iron object holding them together???

Yep. I see four of them and you will too once they release from each other.

If you do find a safe way to separate the coins please post a photo of each one. I'd be more than happy to help you identify them. Happy treasure hunting.

Thank you Antiquarian. I like helping identify treasure findings when I can.
