Hello everyone,
First time posting but have been reading a lot on a bunch of very helpful topics on this forum and thank you. I recently started coin roll hunting and metal detecting and have been so intrigued by everything. As of late I just purchased a box of halves to see what I can come up with, but after going through all of them and reading the "beginner guide to coin rolling" post I noticed that I should keep proofs. I'm actually having trouble figuring out how to determine a proof half or coin for that matter. So my question is what is a proof? What do I need to look for to find a proof half? Do I look for the same thing in other coins?

Thanks,
Brown

A proof coin is a coin struck using a special, high-quality minting process, and made especially for collectors. Modern proof coins often have mirror-like fields and frosted devices, although proof coins struck prior to the mid twentieth century are often distinguished only by their high quality surfaces. In all cases, the term proof always refers to a type of coin, or the way it was struck, and not to a coin's grade.

You probably wont find proof coins in circulation, because they are made for collectors, and sold by the mint for more than face value.

Thanks, that's exactly what I needed to know. Now in the coin rolling section it also mentions to keep the years 2001 and up because it wasn't meant for circulation? Might be a silly question but how did they get out then?

I don't keep proofs unless they are silver and I sell or trade those to people that need them for their collections.
