This primered cartridge was recently found in an attic among some 1800's items, but I've been totally unable to find any info that might help identify it. Can anybody help? Here are the dimensions (inches);
There are no markings anywhere.

64cal.jpg

Case dia base: .642
Case dia crimp: .625
Rim dia: .736
bullet dia: .597
Overall length: 2.136

Thanks in advance for your help!

Jim

Thanks very much for providing all those super-precise measurements for the cartridge and its lead bullet. Now, we need a straight-on sideview photo, so we can see the curvature of the bullet's nose.

Looked in my antique & modern firearm book and the only cartridge is .600 N.E. Lead bullet, Curio........ price back in 1994 was $37.00 that's all the info they give. There is 5 different names that made a .580. but yours is only .003 off from .600.

Maybe one of the .58 1866 trapdoor conversions that never took off

I was thinking the diameter of the led not the caliber so i dont know what caliber he's got. I just measured a 38 cal but the led dia is .350 but a 22 cal led measures .220.

it can be deceiving at times. my Winchester model 1892 in the 38-40 caliber, which means 38 caliber and 40 grains of black powder, actually has a bullet diameter of .401.
