This object is part of a collection of assorted things found at a local construction site. The other objects are parts of farm tools, small household items, and architectural items (hinges, etc.) that appear to date from the late 19-early 20th century. My students and I have had no luck figuring out what this one is. Can anyone help?
It's rusted iron, length is just shy of 5", and weighs 12 3/8 ounces. The narrow end is grooved, as if it fits into an opening or another object. It tapers from 7/8" thick at the narrow end to 1/8" thick at the wide end. I hope the pictures help make sense of this. My students are dying to find out what this is!

The pointed artifact looks like a cable lock that was used on big boats. The grooves would hold the strands of cable to the inside of a bell and make fast an eye on the cable end.
