I can't find that post... Strange. At any rate, I think firmly Federal Era. (i.e., could easily date to the time of the attire shown). Another clue I think is the skinny, non-regal Eagle depicted. Look at the thin neck and gangly features of the 1782 die for the US seal. The downturned wings seem to be a trait of the same period in terms of patriotic designs. That said, the piece could either be patriotic or more specific. But it seems that when an actual figure was represented on cufflinks, watch winders, or other small adornment, the at least some indication was given as to the identity of that individual. I think what you have here is a patriotic piece made between c.1780 and c.1820. That's my hunch.

It absolutely is a Dandy! And yes, it could very well be of French origin.

George-washington-Peale-L.jpg George Washington, Peale

Hello Tom,

Thanks for the excellent photos. I've looked at the photos several times, and keep returning to the shield. First, and continuing looks suggest a squirrel rampant, but it's gotta be tiny. and lion seems more likely…

Then there's the Hidden Hand theorists: The Hidden Hand that Shaped History though, I'm having trouble featuring Stalin as a Mason.

It was a common pose from toga days to whatever time zone Stalin inhabited. Not so much lately.

True it could just as easily be Lord Nelson, who was missing his right arm and might explain the flat appearance of that arm on this.

But, as important, are there possibly dates to each side of the man's head, I think I can read 1819 on the left?
