Help ID this sword.

I have recently inherited an old sword that was found during the Korean War. I was unable to learn much of the story as to how it was found, and it seems nobody in the family remembers anything about it. I know that it is a machete, though I don't know any specifics about the blade other than this. What I am asking is for help in trying to identify who it was possibly made by, and any historical information that might pertain to a blade like this. I would also like suggestions on where I could take this to learn more information about it, as the local university and museum wont help identify weaponry.

As I have stated the sword is a machete, though unlike any I can find. It is a stag handled blade, but what i found most interesting is that the blade itself had decorative engravings along both its sides.

The blades measurements are as follow:
total length from tip of blade to end of handle: 30 1/2"
Length of grip: 6 "
length from start of blade to tip on the side with an edge: 24"
Length on blade on side not sharpened: 21 3/4"
width of blade at widest point: 2 1/2"
Width of blade just above the handle: 1 3/4"

Re: Need Help with ID

Thank you for the reply, I am unsure if its from that area or not. I would still like to hear other thoughts about the possible history of this blade. I have been searching online and have not found any machete with engravings upon them. Nor have I found any machete with a similar stag handle. After looking at the blade closer I am noticing just above the handle on the blade there is a Mark. It appears to me that this mark was placed into the blade after the original forging though.

The mark says TJ then has an upside down J and another TJ.

I dont know what this mark could be but someone suggested perhaps the blade was marked when it came in through customs?

Neat looking sword/machete there. Is there any way you could upsize your pics to say 640x480 or thereabouts? I think you would get a little more response out of these guys and gals if they could see your pics better.

Re: Need Help with ID

Sorry about the pictures. I think this is the best I can make them without distorting them to badly. I cant seem to get a full length shot of the blade, but I think I have enough measurements to make up for that.

And I have been lurking in the forums for about a year now. but have never before had a reason to post as I dont tend to find much while metal detecting. Thanks for the warm welcome though.

Re: Need Help with ID

I dont believe that it was a swept hilt. But one of the tines on the gaurd is broken off. It only has the gaurd on one side, though it looks as if the gaurd for the back of the hand has snapped off.

Re: Need Help with ID

The one side of the guard that you are seeing is decorative, and completely smooth as it appears to sweep downwards. It does not appear that anything has snapped off at the point you are seeing. Just the opposing side of the grip is missing snapped off. I must assume it would have appeared identical to the side you are seeing

looks a bit like a" german boar hunting" sword --with a broken hand guard

Re: Need Help with ID

Alright I looked a bit into these german forester and boar hunting swords. And from what I can tell they are nothing like this blade. Most of the boar hunting swords are a thinner blade, that do not have the appearance of a machete. I am not near the sword right now but I will take a few more pictures of the blade to give it a better representation. The blade I have appears much thicker than any of the hunting swords I have seen and as the dimensions show starts out narrow widens and then angles to a point.

I do appreciate all the guesses and I have faith the origin of this will be solved.
