If you dont like any of the answers, you can always call it a rusty corn cob holder ::)

Forget about the corn cob thingy. Its probably just a broken rusty nail. I find them all the time on the beach from shipwrecks but dont save them anymore. The nail becomes a very thin sharp point surrounded by a clump of rust. When it breaks, the broken pieces will fit exactly together. If you dont give it some electrolysis treatment it will crack and break into more pieces. Where else can you analyze worthless rusty nails than here in the MD hobby! :D  BTW cagle welcome to TN.

Its probably a nail but could be anything steel. It could be a part of a fish hook or a wire. Nails are most common. Some old nails actually have value but if corroded this bad there is not much you can do with it but watch it disintegrate..
