In my area there is a dump that we recently finished digging out. Now that we finished I wanted to go back out and metal detect it. The only problem is it’s loaded with rusty cans.
What should I do, I have a whites classic id. I was thinking about turning down the sensitivity and turning up the discrimination.
Thanks

I'm not an expert, but if it's truly "loaded" with rusty cans that you know of, then there's probably lots of bits and pieces of rusty cans as well and lots that you don't know of - all of that means a nightmare for a metal detector.

Personally I see only 2 choices:

1) Turn up the descrimination which in all likelihood will cause you to miss coins if they are there.

or

2) Grid off a reasonable section and dig everything - once you pull out all the cans and junk, you back over it again as though it was a "clean" hunting spot.

Sometimes there's sites that are just too messed up with garbage to detect unless you have unlimited time and patience.
