Found this one yesterday in a field near some colonial homes but there is a mid 19th century home right across the street from where I found it. I have found mostly coins and relics dating from the late 18th century in this field though. It appears to be somewhat crude and high karat so that would most likely make it pre Civil War and the oval shape would date it to no earlier than 1780 most likely. The back of the link is like no other I can find though and is what is throwing me off. May not even be a linked button. I think Im just gonna call it circa 1800 unless someone has a better idea

That's a hard call my friend, due to the style of the back I would think later rather than earlier. I think your on the right track

I still think mine looks like an earlier experiment with that type of back. Ive seen a bunch with the same back in your pic but none with the type mine has but I am leaning more towards civil war period now. Its hard to discount the lack of 20th and even late 19th century finds in this field and the whale back and bullet/toggle back were way more common by the 20th century. This would likely date to after the plain shank style of colonial period and a little bit later but before the whale back and toggle back. Either way its gold and I love it.
