I recently found this brass button backmarked with what appears to be "I CARTER JR * NEW YORK". I can't find a single mention of a button maker with that name online, and nothing in the few books that I referenced. I checked NY city directories from the nineteenth century and found an Isaac Carter listed as a shoemaker in 1845 and Isaac M. Carter listed as a manufacturer in 1864, but I have no idea if they are the I. Carter that I'm looking for. I wasn't able to find any other I. Carters listed throughout the nineteenth century. To me, the button style appears to be an Omega type ca. 1800-1830.
Does anyone have any information about I. CARTER JR.? I would love to get a period of manufacture.
Thanks!
