Hi everyone,

I need help figuring out if this plate is real or a replica.

It does have flea bites/ rust marks. But the paint on it doesn't look that old.

It is 4.5 Inches all around.

THANKS!

I am always hesitant to respond to "what is it" requests from a brand new user.. especially when it appears that the item in question is for sale now on eBay.. makes me think you'll never be back to read my answer.

But anyway. According to a popular Chinese porcelain collecting website, the Ming Chenghua mark was very consistent across authentic examples, to the point where some believe that a single person was responsible for all of the marks during that period. One very specific feature of authentic Ming Chenghua porcelein seems to be that the mark contained six characters, every time. Your mark has only four characters. Another antique website says that not a single porcelain "artifact" having a four-character Ming Chenghua mark has ever been authenticated as being true Ming Chenghua porcelain. These are evidently later imitations, often much, much later according to some collectors. While I can't claim to be an expert in Chinese porcelain, I'd say there's enough evidence to deem this plate a reproduction.
