Digging in the front yard of a house built in 1850. It sits a block away from Fort Reno is Washington, DC.

It’s full of trash and I just started digging this site. Today I dug a really deep hole and found what looked to be either some sort of line that had been capped or an artillery shell. I know it’s probably not shell, but either way I just want to be safe.

The circle is a little smaller than the palm of my hand and has four protruding nubs around the circle. Gas line?

By the way, I covered it back up. Thanks for the help! 34BF8986-AB3F-4857-849D-35A4DC4F4537.jpeg

You should be very careful, houses used to use acetylene for gas lamps in the home and the yard. It is obviously a capped off pipe and its size says either water or gas.

with the style plug that is shown there I would bet money on it being a septic/sewer cleanout
that type of plug is not used on gas or water lines also according to his description its approximately a 3" plug shown

Ah, I thought he was saying the hole it was in was the size of his palm, which would have made the pipe much smaller.

Interesting! I would first see how deep the pipe goes, see what you actually dealing with. With a slot on the top you would assume that it would screw off of the pipe. Just be careful.

The top looks like a water meter but unlike a water meter pipe, this pipe goes straight down. It’s at approx. 4” in diameter. Since it’s not my yard, I’m not going to mess with it. I like my face the way it is.
