Hi folks. Im new to this site and hope that you guys out there could supply some info on an unusual looking medallion I find whilst clearing out some junk.

It is approx 5cm in diameter and about 4 - 5 mm thick and weighs 38 grams. Although it doesnt tarnish (its never been cleaned) I dont think its gold as it doesnt seem to weigh enough.

I have no idea where this item came from, it seems to been in a box of bits and bobs for as long as I can remember.

If anyone has any info I would be very grateful.

Many thanks

Wow - no idea. Not to be a pain in the neck but you could take a photo of it from the side so we can see a profile of the loop. Maybe something can be deciphered from its construction. I mean it looks pretty crude - which could mean old, hand-made, or made somewhere they are still using old techniques (or any combination thereof). It's silver colored right?

It doesn't look to me like there are any letters, characters etc on it. Is that correct? The upper right quadrant looks like it has one arabic letter "nuun" but I cold be seeing things in the clouds. Its cool whatever it is and you should have it tested for precious metal content. That might help with an ID as well.

Hi randazzo1 thanks for your reply. It is a gold colour but like I said it doesnt seem to weigh enough to be gold. I took it to a local goldsmiths here in the UK but they wanted £30 to test it, I walked!! It does look like it is crudely made and specially around the loop, which you will see in the photo I have posted. Makes me think it is an unfinnished piece as the reversed side is of quite high quality. The letters you mention are just "U" s repeated around the outside edge or could even be part worn "O" s
I had the initial though as you being that it maybe Arabic but a friend of mine has suggested that it wont be as Islam forbids the depiction of Gods creations in art and you can clearly see animals on one side. I forgot to mention that it is convex. The front of the medallion/pendant "seems" to have three upsidedown headless torsos and one upright torso with a head! Quite spooky really!

Many thanks

Wow, thanks so much for the welcome and the ID, IronSpike.
Hit the nail on the head there I think, fantastic.
All I have to figure out now is how, where and when did I aquire this? Absolutel no memory at all of first seeing this, as I said it has always turned up during tidy ups!
Being a bit cheeky now but I dont suppose you have a phot of the other side?
Thanks again and all the best.
