Well the weather here in Michigan is up to 50 degrees..so I thought I would try out my christmas present. Much to my disappointment...I think there is a problem with my new Garrett.
I was at an old picnic site by a local lake and my detector would keep going off, but giving me a different reading almost all the time. I put it in coin mode and tried again...still would show 5 cent...then 25 cent...sometimes $1. So I dig and find a pull tabs. So I kept trying and I found out that I could tap on the bottom of the coil and it would go off. I kept tapping lightly on the search coil and it kept going off. So I turned down the sensitivity to about half and it wouldn't make a sound when I tapped anymore...but it still doesn't register a target correctly. I even dug down about 4" and planted a dime and scanned over it and sometimes it would detect it as a penny or a quarter, sometimes it wouldn't detect it at all.....I think I have a short or something...I need advice before I send it back and get a new one.

Sounds like you might have a crack in your coil.
Symptoms are like that, if you have another coil, or can borrow one you might
try that.

Or if you have only tried this place, you might try different placed its possible you are close
to something that can cause major interference.
there are place close to high voltage power lines that can do that,
I also saw once where there was some kind of underground cable that prevented
me from getting within 20 feet of a certain area.
Bummer as that area was 200 years old...
Good luck.

Hi Cmlmich here's my two cents for what it's worth ma-by the ground is really saturater with pull tabs,i get some really crazy readings with pull tab especially in wet soil,l been keeping the sensitivity down to about 3.coins always lock on,you weren't tapping the coil with your watch on were ya. ;)

Hi JimC.....I thought too that maybe if there was alot of junk around it may be the cause, but seeing how it goes off when tapping on the coil.....that makes me think something is wrong... I don't think it should go off when tapping on the coil even if the sensitivity is turned all the way up....but I did make sure I used the hand with no ring ::)

I remember me old Whites used to go off by tapping it against rocks, Branches, etc. My friend has a DFX & a n XLT, and they both do that. he is always complaing about it. so I wouldnt read too much into that. But personally I'd disconnect all wires, Check all the plugs, make shure nothings bent, reassemble & try it in a totally different location. IF everything works good, go back to the place you had problems & see if it happens again. GOOD LUCK ; Jeff................? BTW, you are using ALKALINES RIGHT ? and the connection is good there ?

Jeff...thanks for tips....I will try that before I send it back....I called the place that sold it to me and he said he would send another one or even Garrett would take care of me, but I will try this first...I am using the batteries that came with the unit...I will check that as well...

just out of curiosity i turned my sensitivity all the way up and sure enough when i flash my hand passed the coil it will go off but not when i tap it maybe picking up the iron in my blood

Sorry to hear youre having trouble with yours cml. I hope mine is OK. Its good to hear Sean is standing behind his sales and willing to help out.

And it still isnt here!!!!!!!! I guess it will be Tuesday :'(

Thanks Zeke..... I do think it is a bad coil....It just shouldn't go off everytime the coil is bumped..how are you suppose to get a good signal from a bad one that way? I also found out that Garrett will take care of me if needed too, which is nice.

cml........did you ever get your 250 figured out? Bad coil?

Mine is gonna take some getting use to. Seems like I found more with the old Bounty Hunter. I'll get a penny or dime signal at 4" and there wont be anything there ??? I had a hole dug in my yard this afternoon the size of a basketball looking for a dime at 4" and nothing. But still getting the same signal.

Also.....seems like the pinpoint comes and goes. Sometimes it will just make a "blip" then nothing. Have to let off pinpoint button and do again to get it to work. And one more......Im having trouble getting a repeatable signal. Is there a lag time between tones? Do you have to wait a certain period of time to pass back over the original signal spot to get another one?
