Hello, im new and currently in New Jersey for a couple more years just looking for a casual hobby to pick up and have a interest in history.

Welcome JCJ! This could turn out to be a bit more than a casual hobby as a lot of folks thought that detecting would be casual and then they found they really liked it and have spent a lot more time on it. I would think it will stay casual till the first gold ring is found and then you could find it taking a lot more of your time.

One of the first things to do is check out youtube vids for how to cut a plug so the grass is not killed. I will add to this that laying a cloth on the ground to put the extra dirt on top of really helps to keep the grass clean thus allowing you to come back again and again as some locations are never really totally cleared of good targets.
