Hello, I'm new here

I am very happy to have found this forum. For years I have been interested in treasure hunting/ metal detecting but this place might just encourage me to actualy take the plunge once and for all.

I am a Canadian from Vancouver living on the Costa del Sol in Spain and am considering purchasing a metal detector. There are many military sites, barricks and bunkers left over from Franco's rule, along the beaches here. Not to mention the beaches themselves are packed with people a few months out of the year. I've never seen anyone here detecting to I imagine there could be a wealth of interesting objects to be found.

The Russian WWII posts also have me very intrigued. I've been wanting to dig in old battel sites for some time as I am a greatly interested in WWII history.

Can anyopne please help point me in the right direction for perhaps purchasing a reasonably priced decent performing detector? I don't have a ton of money but would really like to get started with equipment that does what it's supposed to so as not to be frustrated or disapointed in my first experiences.

Any help or words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Re: Hello, I'm new here

Hmmm, after a small amount of research, it would appear that Spain might have some prohibitive laws concerning detecting. Does anyone out there have any experience with detecting in Spain?

My appologies if this is the wrong area to be posting this stuff. It just seems like this forum category gets the most traffic.

Regarding detectors, I've read some of the other posts and categories, and the recommendations are quite varied! Where to begin?

Welcome to the forum. If you have been following for a while you already know that there is a wealth of information here. I am fairly new to detecting my self but here's my 2 cent worth. I started with the Garrett's Ace 250. It is easy to use and offers many features not found in other detectors in the same price range ($200-$250). Having been detecting for a while now I am considering a upgrade because I would like more depth. So if money is not a major concern you may want to consider a mid to high range detector, but for the money you can't beat the Ace.

Re: Hello, I'm new here

I hate to break the bad news to you but, it is illegal to detect in Spain. I believe it is possible to get a permit. I was considering driving down to Spain from Germany for a nice detecting holiday and a winter break and checked into detecting there. I would ask first before you invest your money. The Garrett Ace 250 is the best bang for the buck these days at around $200.00, not sure if it's a good machine for salty beaches though. Please post any info you find out about detecting in Spain and good luck! HH, Mike

Re: Hello, I'm new here

There was someone that posted that they lived in span in the past and detected and had no problem but he said it was illegal. You are sopposed to have permits here in Germany but it is not enforced widely. ;D
