Hello I'm a Newbie!!!

Hi...

I'm new to this hobbie, so I would like some enlightment on this matter.
For examle, what equipment you guys reccomend for someone like me that is just starting to do this stuff?
I am native from a small town in North West Mexico, Actually living in Tijuana borders with San Diego Ca.

About some 30 Miles from my hometown theres an old colonial era town, which was founded by the Spanish in the 1700's I think, and it was a mining town, lots of Gold, Silver and some other kinds of mines around there, and lots of old abandoned Haciendas, the town has a history of numerous (lots actually) treasure findings, most of them are burried pots with gold/silver coins, as you know back then there weren't any banks, so people burried their valuables.

So I'm thinking that in my next trip there would be nice to bring a metal detecting devide and start a search in a piece of land (about 1 acre) that used to be part of an Hacienda (now abandoned and in ruins) and owned by a relative.

So, to end this long story, what equipment you guys reccomend for a job like that? are those relative inexpensive $150 dollar metal detectors useful?

Tips on equipment for newcomers for this hobbie please.

Thanks a lot.. ;)

Re: Hello I'm a Newbie!!!

Hi LUFT, and welcome to the forum! Sounds like you have some promising places to detect. Good luck and let us know what you find!

As far as choosing a detector, I would say to stick with the name brands (Whites, Garrett, Fisher, Minelab, Tesoro, Bounty Hunter). All of them detect OK, some go deeper than others, some offer more discrimination, some have more controls, etc. I would say that it's best to go to your local dealers and look at the various models and try out a few of the ones that interest you. Don't buy until you try.

Get on the web and go through the manufacturer's website. Read detector reviews by actual users. Find out as much as you can, test drive the detector that you like and go for it.

Check for local clubs in your area, local people can be a big help.

Re: Hello I'm a Newbie!!!

Hello Luff,
Firstly welcome to the forum. I'm also a newbie here. Been detecting for a while now. Like Beep said, do your homework, find out all you can on detectors. It also depends on what type of ground you want to detect in, eg. beach, golfields, parks, etc. Depends on where you live and what's available to you. All the best.
Cheers Angela :)

Re: Hello I'm a Newbie!!!

The Ace 250 seems to be the detector of choice for beginners around here. Its around $200 US, and from the sounds of things, has pretty good depth. It would depend on just how deep the caches were buried as to whether it would work for you, but probably a good choice. best of luck out there!
