I'm Dave and I'm new here. :hello: am in the Army for another 2 months then I'll retire after 29 years. I have a Scorpion Gold Stinger that I bought several years ago. I have just ordered the AT Pro and can't wait to get it out.

I am stationed in Ft Riley KS but we are out in Ft Irwin CA for maneuver exercises. My job this time out here is take care of things while the unit is in the field. While I have been here I have picked the bag of change I have in the picture below. I did not bring my Garrett out here with me. I found all of this just laying on the surface. We had a lot of high winds in the last day or two and this change is laying all over the place. I have even found two Wheaties out here.

I have one question why or how do pennies "rot" in this environment. I've found several that have holes in them and the rest of the coin is worn away.

Well, 64, it's entirely voluntary so THANK YOU for your sacrifice and service to this great country. I finished my tour 42 years ago, Vietnam twice. All volunteer. Now I have a bunch of medals to lie about! Really, thanks again. TTC

Thank you for your Service! I have three trips into Iraq all three well equally unfun!

DEHew64,thank you for your service.
The newer lincolns have a lot of zink in them. Besides the dissimilar metals wanting to corrode, the environment they are in ,salt or fertilizer and ground mineralisation gets them corroding fast. If the older copper coins show less damage it may confirm its the modern composition.
Hope your retirement is great and lots of exciting finds await you.:weee:

Nothing to offer other than Thanks for your service to our country!

Welcome...

from Central Florida!

Thanks for your service!

Thanks to all for the great welcome. I hope to post quite a bit over the course of the next few months!

And a special thanks to Releventchair for the answer to my question. These coins I have found in the last couple of weeks have been in the High Desert in Ft Irwin California

A big thank you for your service from another veteran

Welcome, Dave! You're going to love/hate retirement, but it's nice to sleep in your own bed every night without being serenaded by rockets ;)

How about in a bunker, in front of the mobile 155's, during the Tet Offensive of '68, at Bhu Bai, just south of Hue? When you hear the shout, "FIRE MISSION", you open your mouth and press your hands against your ears and HOPE they don't shoot over the bunker. The blast will KNOCK you out of the bunk most times! My own bed? Yes! Seems like only last week. (shudder) TTC

Welcome aboard Dave and thank you for your military service!

I'm also stationed at Ft Riley and new to metal detecting, cant wait to get out there and find some stuff!

I will add my thanks to all of the veterans and soon to be veterans and fathers and mothers for your service to the country!

I've done a fair amount of detecting in and around Redwood City in northern California and back then the pennies were still copper and in some locations a few were eaten up so I would assume fertilizer was used or they had a lot of cats and dogs.

People loose things/stuff all the time so it is a never ending supply of items to be found though it is fun to find older coins or gold rings or silver coins or silver rings. Have fun...............63bkpkr

Welcome from So Cal, HH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :hello:
