Hi all,

I'm Darren. Completely new to detecting. My wife has purchased me a Garret Ace 250 for my birthday. It hasn't even arrived yet in the mail, but I'm excited and eager to learn how to use it and get started.

Hopefully the cold weather breaks soon and I can get out and find some stuff. I think I'll start in my yard. We live in a historic district (Sauer Buildings Historic District - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) where the homes are old, with unique construction. I hope I can find some interesting things right here - but we will see!

Welcome from 15 miles south of Pittsburgh. Your yard is a great place to start/learn. That's what I did and I learned a lot. Found a 1777 Spanish 2 reale coin in my yard, which I have no idea how it got there. Living in an histoiric district should be a plus too.

You might also consider joining a local club like the Monroeville Area Metal detector club. I did and went to one of their seeded hunts where they hide coins that you then try to find. It help learn to use the detector with a variety of coins. Membership also gets you a permit to hunt Allegheny county parks. They have two seeded hunts and a couple park hunts that are not seeded.

Welcome aboard! Take a look at Sub-Forums: Pennsylvania for information (i.e., clubs, etc.) directly related to your state.

You might spend more time than you expect in your own yard! Use your lawn to practice cutting good plugs, then hit your neighbors up...almost a guarantee that its virgin turf... good luck!

Welcome from N. Mississippi. Sounds like you have done the right prep work. Be sure to check between the street and sidewalks. Lots of goodies there. Good luck to you.

Congrats on the MD Darren and happy birthday! Welcome to the forum...
