Hello folks,
Live in south NJ here, I remember going with my grandfather about 30 years ago with a metal detector, few months ago I saw someone with one and it brought back some memories. Looking to maybe get into it again, any suggestions on an entry level detector. I don't want to spend a fortune but like all things, I do believe you get what you pay for. So started doing some research and stumbled on this site.

Thanks in advance

Welcome from NJ.

If you want accurate advise on a starter detector, you need to give us some more info.
(1) What is your spending limit?
(2) What you will plan on hunting? Gold, silver, coins, relics, caches ect.
(3) What areas you plan to hunt in? Just dry land, beaches, wet sand near water and underwater.

Under 300
not sure, heard stories about old wagon trails near my house in the woods, so maybe gold or coins, or metal objects
and mostly dry land but not ruling out an occasional beach or lake bank, but i'd say 95% dry.

Welcome Glock, you will have people tell you that this brand or that brand is best, do some research and find one that fits your budget. Good luck.

I personally would recommend you look at the following models: Garrett Ace 250, Tesoro Cibola, or Vaquero, as well as Fisher F2, or F4. All are very good machines and each has their followers. I personally use the Vaquero and have been very happy. Find and attend a club near you, great for information gathering as well as finding a hunt buddy.

Hi guys thanks for the replies! I found a store near me that I never knew existed and the guy there answered all my questions and to my surprise he suggested the Garrett 250 but I ended up buying the 350 it was in my budget and seemed easy enough to learn on. As soon as my daughter and I got home we took a walk through my neighbors field and we found some old soda cans and even an old stainless steel spoon with " State of NJ" stamped on the handle. My daughter is only 6 so the first time it took me more than 3 minutes to find something she started to loose interest. But we had a good time and she wants to go again so that's worth every penny. I'm sure I'll be posting more as time goes on and look forward to making some new friends.

Thanks again,
-Joe
