Hello all. I have been reading this site for the past few nights and probably know enough to make me dangerous. I have a 8 and 6 year old boys that want to get into metal detecting as do I. Yes, dad started this!

I was wondering if the Bounty Hunter TK4 Tracker IV Metal Detector was a good choice for the boys or if anyone can lead me in the best or easiest (fun too) direction to go for them.

Then there is me. Being in Miami, Florida I am looking for something durable and am looking at a few detectors. I am not convinced based on what I have read on this site that one metal detector really does it all. Maybe I am wrong...but I was wondering what everyone or anyone thought about these units and if in fact I am looking at the right metal detectors being in Miami, Florida but want to use it in other areas (parks and family trips).

Minelab Excalibur II 1000 Metal Detector - beach only?

Minelab CTX-3030 - Just saw this tonight and looks nice but big bucks.

Spectra V3i™ Metal Detector - parks, beach, sandbars?

Garrett AT Pro

Thanks to all for your help...

Welcome to TNet. I wouldn't use the excal anywhere else as there is no discrimination except for iron. Garrett AT Pro isn't great for salt water. Spectra is not waterproof as far as I know but that or the Etrac are great for parks/beach. the 3030 is new so I'm not familiar with it. Good luck!

Thank you Debby. It is hard to narrow this down. But I guess I am on the right track in terms of more than one device is the way to go. I find it interesting too that you really have a hard time trying to figure out what manufacturers are going to bring out down the road. Seems like there is more length of use in terms of the actual technology in these things than other electrical devices (phones, computers) on the market.

I am a little concerned about buying a high end unit and then it gets replaced a month or two later..

Hello and welcome to the forum!

welcome, I like to use my at pro on parks/dry land, and my etrac on the beaches, get you a pin pointer too, we use the garrett pro pointer

I have the AT PRO (easy to learn....10 min) and it does great at the beach, its not the best in the water but its good enough to go out and see if you want to buy the EXCAL in future.

Welcome to the forum. Those are some great equipment choices. The Minelab Excalibur is one of the best beach and saltwater machines on the market. In your area, with proper research, experience and dedication, a hunter can make his machine pay for itself.
