Hello from Long Island and Adirondaks NY

I'm happy to be here and learn from you guys. I bounce back and forth from LI to the Adirondaks, 2 houses and all that. I've wanted to get into metal detecting since I've been a kid. Now I have the opportunity. I plan to do shallow water and land type detecting. What is a good unit that I can buy that will start me off and allow me to grow into the hobby. I'd prefer to buy once and learn from the better machine than start with an okay unit than re-purchase later to upgrade. Can you guys point me the right direction?
