Hey Rick,
Welcome to tnet.com the best treasurer hunting site around, with the best people around, and some awesome info to help you out in your new hobby. I guarntee that you will be hooked, addicted, totally sucked into the hobby once you start swinging.
As for recommendations you need to determine what type of hunting coin & jewelry, relic etc., where you will hunt beach/water or dry land, and how much you want to spend on a detector. Just read read read as many of the posts that you can get your hands on and ask questions and it will lead you to a good machine descision.
My recommendation for mid line newbie would Whites MXT or M6 to go lower the Garrett Ace 250 or 350 and to go higher DFX, or AT Pro.
One thing to really consider is the manufactures warranty and there reputation for repair service/standards. Whites and Garrett are two of the best.

Woohoo another Texan... Welcome to T-net... when it comes to a detector... it all depends how much you want to spend... plain and simple.

Welcome Bagpiper, my Daughter just moved to Katy Texas, from cold snowy PA.

Lord have mercy, another Texan. They should just put a big ol lone star up on the banner. My lord, y'all got the internet last year and the site has just become overrun with Tejanos postin pics of all the wild hogs they done killed yesterday in the photo forum. Just kiddin, Bagpiper. I'm 1/8 Texan, grew up in western Oklahoma, and think the Llano Estacado is the greatest place in the world. And hopefully we can get somebody from out there who will start postin pics, and the other members maybe will understand what I'm talkin about.
Welcome to Tnet, hoss!
