Hi everyone. I have been browsing these forums while researching my first detector purchase and decided to jump in the mix. You all seem very knowledgeable and have helped tremendously. My interests would be coins, relics, and beaches. I have a fascination with history and thought this would be a great hobby for myself and my children to do together when they get older. I am a member if the USCG currently stationed in Northern Michigan and waiting anxiously to thaw out.
I have been looking for a detector that is solid, offers flexibility and is one I can grow into instead of growing out off too soon. I think I am about to pull the trigger on an xterra 705. I look forward to chatting with you all as I learn more about detecting.

Welcome to T'net. If you've seen any of my posts here, you probably know that I am big on American made detectors. Spent too many years in USN and USA to be any other way. So my recommendation for coins, relics and beaches would be the Garrett AT Pro. Watch now, Jace, the flaming will start soon. But this is my opinion anyway. If I can help in any way, just PM me. I will tell you what I can, one serviceman to another.

Thank you for the reply. The AT Pro was also on my short list. The price is definitely better but I also like the ability to change frequencies on the 705 with a coil change. I have been back and forth and having a difficult time making a decision. I know both are good detectors.

Welcome aboard! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forums: Select Your Area.... and selecting your state for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country).

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the heads up vpnavy. I see you were a Naval Aviator. I serve as an aircrewman on the Dolphin for the CG. What did you fly?

Jace, the X-terra 705 is a great detector. The 18.75 KHZ coils are great for small jewelry and gold. I used to use an X-terra 50, then bought the 705. I'm now using the CTX3030. Welcome to Treasurenet!

Hi Jace. Welcome to the net. You got to be real good if you are a pilot. Soled "Aug 10th 1949" in a J3 Cub!!! Had quit about 15 years ago cause now I wear Bilateral hearing aids. Anyway, after 40 years of detecting I have finally settled down with the AT Pro. It is light weight and does everything that the high end detectors do. I live 9 miles from the beaches here on the Treasure Coast of Florida. The day after I received the AT Pro I went out to an area that I had worked over and over and over. Pulled up 152 coins in 5 hours. Not bad for an ol Dude like me. ( 80 years young). Any detector in the $600/$700 range will do just about anything you want to do. Maybe later you might want to step up but I don't think that is something you need to worry about now. Just get out there and practice, practice and practice and read the owners manual over and over and over. Best of luck to you and keep on digging. Lynne
