I'm a new member on this site. I have a question? I found a gold ring that had been buried on my mother's property in Artesia , New Mexico on haldeman Rd in between Blevins & fairgrounds Rd when we moved here. It only has on the inside of the ring "solid gold " with no number. It has been cut. It weighs 4.3 grams, & its 88mm in width I think. The rain washed it up to the surface. Does anyone have any ideas. Id love to find out if it's authentic.

one way to know if it's real gold is to take it to a pawn shop, if it's plated they will tell you and not give an offer. if it's real gold they will offer you less than melt price.

Welcome to Tnet.

That’s a pre-1906 ring, using a mark that many less reputable manufacturers used for budget rings sold wholesale to retailers, cynically trading on customer misconceptions about what “solid gold” (without a Karat mark) actually meant.

These rings are below the current minimum US standard of 10K to be called “gold” and usually 6K or lower. So “solid gold” in the sense that they aren’t plated, but alloyed with a very high proportion of copper or other base metals. The National Gold and Silver Stamping Act of 1906 put paid to these kinds of misleading marks.

My Great Grandmother had lost hers and many years later, by chance, I found it. Exactly the same type of ring. It was typical of people back then to cut the ring for comfort of wear as people's ring fingers grew. Not a lot of money to go to a jewelry store and get it resized. The one I found was also cut and said "SOLID GOLD" on the inside. I took it to a jeweler and had the cut repaired.

Welcome to Tnet! For future reference, gold doesn't "wash to the surface". The soil can wash away from around the gold ring, exposing it, but, gold is heavier than dirt and will sink into it until it hits a surface it can't penetrate easily.
