First I'd like to say hello to everyone. I've been lurking for months now and finally decided register.

Now this button was found at a very historic site I've been detecting since this spring. I've found tons of colonial era items here and just need to make sure this isn't from an reenactment since there has been a few here. This was found on private land with owners permission. It was dug on the lakeshore in loose stone. I've included other finds from the same location and day. It looks to good to be true that's why I'm asking :) is this USA button the real deal?

No clue on the button, very nice finds either way.

Thanks JJ. This is my first year detecting and this site always produces at least a handful of goodies.

Looks like you are having a great 1st year. Keep it up and post your finds. Welcome to the site.

Check out my profile album Honey Hole. That pic is of the same property a couple months back. Ive found a lot more since that photo just haven't put it all together for a group pic. Lots of coins, musket balls and buttons. Most of the land is farmed so the larger items are found in pieces like buckles. I also found the 2 reale there too

I hope your right but it looks to good compared to the ones I've seen dug.

It's got good patina and you found it with other flat buttons.

That's a really nice looking button. It looks brass to me especially with the lines on the back. I'm no expert but I believe most USA buttons were made from pewter which would be more silver/gray looking with a patina. Also pewter doesn't hold up too well over time. I'd suggest you send an email and pic to Don Troiani at HAPRINTS@aol.com He's a great artist of Civil War and Revolutionary War soldiers/scenes and has an extensive collection of CW and Rev War artifacts so he can make his paintings as authentic as possible. He's also published/co-published a book or two on Rev War buttons/relics. You can also check out this Q&A http://allthingsliberty.com/2013/02/10-questions-with-don-troiani/

Thanks rov for your comments. It is a grey color almost like what silver looks like when it's tarnished. I've contacted Mr Troiani and we have been talking through email. Ill let you guys know what he thinks

Just to update the thread I've been in contact with Mr Troiani and he believes its the real deal. Its larger than your typical USA buttons and is a French import so it's real rare.

That's cool. Didn't know we got French USA button imports. Did you determine the material it's made from?

I'm thinking pewter but not really sure. When it was first found it was slightly bent and I was able to bend it back with my fingers.

Very sweet button! Congratulations.

Steve

Thanks guys. Turns out this site was a hot spot for relics. Here's a pic of the better buttons I've found there.

And 3 9 pound cannonballs and tons of canister/grape shot. One cannonball has the British Broad Arrow mark. I also found a spoon with the Broad Arrow and initials of a soldier.
