Found on a site where I've found a couple of Spanish silver coins and some tombac buttons. Does this go back that far? Also is heel tap the proper name?
Thanks

I'd say newer since there's still rust spots where it was fastened.

The first of the heel taps I have seen on here are from post CW era on up to the 1960's. I remember heel taps from highschool not the CW era, but the 1960s! ::) Monty

Heel plate wold be a more common term. Yours is cast. The "tombac" era ones I have seen were heavy sheet brass with a heart cutout.

Heel plates were used during the civil war and a later. I'm not sure on the date on the one posted but would guess it's post civil war. I could be wrong though. Just because there are rusted spots where there were nails doesn't mean anything about the age. I dug civil war period plates and taps with some of the nails still in them.

Here's 3 more broken ones I've found at the same site.

Thanks to all for the replies.

I find this style more frequently at mid-1800s sites.
