Heel Plate - Civil War?

Is this a civil war boot heel plate? I've seen plenty of these heel plates (e.g., heart, clover, cross, circle, etc.), but never one with this particular shape/style. I found it in Baton Rouge, LA at the site of what used to be a ferry crossing during the civil war.

Looks like a heel plate to me. Never seen one like that either, tho. They were certainly used during the Civil War, but also used for many years before and many years after the war.

Yours has pointed inserts whereas this one has squared ones, but basically the same.
