For your viewing pleasure and help with identification/clarification. Found yesterday at the 1800's shooting range hill. The big bullet appears to be a .45-70, but I would like the opinions of experts on it. I found a bent cartridge in the same general area, about 200 yards away, last year. The casing is marked U.M.C. .45 Govt., could it be for the same type of bullet?

The little brass buckle is about 1 1/4" wide is marked, "Heavy Rubber," and I was wondering if it could be off of a vintage slicker, boots, harness, suspenders, etc...?

Thanks again for your help, happy hunting, Sub 8-)

Union Metallic Cartridge company would be a civilian 45-70 case, and the bullet could well have been fired out of that case, because to my eye, without measurements it looks like 45-70 bullets that I cast now. That said, your case might well date back to the 1800's. I got the following out of Wikipedia.

In 1886 Remington Arms Company started business. Remington was actually a stock company long before that, but the company we are interested started in 1886. In 1888, Remington was purchased by Marcus Hartley and Partners, a major sporting goods chain who also owned the Union Metallic Cartridge Company in Bridgeport Connecticut. Bridgeport became the home of Remington's ammunition plant. In 1912, Remington and Union Metallic Cartridge company were combined into a single entity, called Remington UMC. Even today, Remington produces U.M.C. brand ammunition. In 1915, the plant at Ilion was expanded, and with this expansion became basically the same plant as today.

My SWAG on the other item is suspenders.
