Heavy object needs id

I found this buried under a large, old tree root.
The tree has obviously grown over this item.
It was a job to dig out!
It hasn't been cleaned very well yet, but I thought maybe someone had an idea as to its identity.
I've asked several friends and they have no idea.
It is heavy and measures approx. 22 inches long.

I believe what you have there is a tie rod to an older automobile.
