Not sure what this thing is , it looks like some sort of large nut, but no threads completely smooth. It weighs about 4-5 pounds and was found in a homestead from early to mid 1800's. No clue to what it may be, the measurements are 4" x 4"X 1 1/2" . The hole that goes through the thing is bigger on one side then the other.

A fire starter . Put the stick in the tapered hole and it is held upright while you work the bow back and forth. The cube holds and allows the embers to stay in one spot so it can bwe dropped on the dry wool/wood etc to start the fire. Actually seen one of thewse tjhings in action they work well

I dont understand how it would work. Do you put a small piece of wood in the hole with the stick? ??? Where and what is the ember created from? ??? Is the wood under the heavy metal square?
