I really don't think that this was used for cooking. It is very heavy and solid. It was found in an area where a lot of horse related items such as horse shoes, stirrups, harness buckles and iron tools were found. Could it be a type of farrier's tool? Any help would be appreciated!

It looks like a ''peeling spud'' for taking bark off from logs .

It looks too small to be a peeling spud and is not concave. Of course you may be 100% correct. Any other guesses?

Now that I see the pic of the smaller peeling spud I think mojjax hit the nail on the head the first time! It is too thick and heavy to be used for cooking so I would say it IS a short handled peeling spud.

The reason I question is ,the handle of your item looks like it was wedged into a longer handle....most barkspuds have the protective steel hole that the pole slides into....not the metal spud sliding into the pole.....the way yours looks is that any pressure from the peeling process would crack the handle immediately .....some of the smaller narrower spuds had the set up like yours, but they are not as wide
