I've posted this in the 'what kind of rock is this' thread and the meteorite thread but can't seem to find out just exactly what this is so maybe someone here is familiar with this kind of specimen. It's surprisingly heavy at 21 pounds and if my math is right the specific gravity is 8.35. Maybe it's just a hunk of iron ore but appears to have been super heated on one end.

Heavy Hunk of Rock

A friend asked me to find out what I could about this specimen.
It weighs 21 pounds.
It displaces 6 cups of water in a bucket.
Dimensions are roughly 7" x 6" x 4 1/2".
It is magnetic but more so on the end that looks volcanic.
It came in a load of rock from the California Sierras.

Any ideas?
thanks-

I think its slag from iron making.
Just doesnt look natural to me.

My friend had a masonry supply business. It came in a load of rock, whether from a quarry or gathered from fieldstone I couldn't say. I don't think it's man made.
Thanks for the reply though.
