Heavy Brass Swivel Piece??? from Eagle "A" Field

Hey Big Cypress, was wondering if you've seen something like this? I dug it in the field where I dug alot of those early 1850s Military Buttons. Its heavy brass and

looks like it either attached to something iron or has an iron tip? :icon_scratch: The center hole in it looks maybe like a swivel and has slits at the top for what looks like

maybe leather straps. It looks alot like a swivel gun carraige except the "slit's" instead of bolts or bearings. Thanks for looking

The guys that are digging out in the fields may be better able to recognize what this is. I dont dig much here in South Florida anymore. But if I get a chance Ill search the net... Some kind of swivel piece or harness... looks familiar. :dontknow:

Most of the swivel gun carriages I've seen were iron--but I'm sure that there were some brass ones made... That said, such a carriage would have two post holes for the gun to fit--not slots for straps. Straps would not restrain the recoil of a gun like that. It would be more than a bloody nose for the artillerist. Probably more like broken ribs. (The piece looks too small, too)

I'm not sure what that is, but I am certain that it is something. How contaminated with modern items was the site you found it at? If it wasn't, then you should perhaps check CW era large artillery items for a match--as well as 19th c. farming implements and machinery.

it allmost looks like it could have been a early "saddle tee". they are straped or clamped to the pipe after a hole is drilled. in this case it looks like the hole through it could have been for a brass petcock type valve......they were used alot on old engines and such to drain oil. hmmmm but why the pointed top?

Yes poolguy it looks like a saddle tap. http://www.plumbingsupply.com/hot-wet-taps-for-pvc-pipe.html

The pointed top could be the remains of the iron stem. The strap could have been metal.

Heres a different version. tap-saddles.jpg

Can you remove any dirt from the side hole? Is it threaded?
Is there a hole on both sides?

I am wondering if this could be a lamp iron from a carriage/buggy/wagon?

Exactly, that was why I said " The center hole in it looks maybe like a swivel and has slits at the top for what looks like

maybe leather straps. It looks alot like a swivel gun carraige except the "slit's" instead of bolts or bearings. " but that said, its quite heavy and seems like it was made to take alot of weight

Does the side hole go all the way through? Can you clean out the dirt? Is the side hole threaded?

Thanks Breezie ...
Do you have a pic showing a similar lamp iron? It may help move the discussion forward.
