Found at an 1800s house site. It has multiple markings including a "4724" on one side, an "MR" kinda fused together, maybe a maker mark? and also an "S" with a star above it. There is a piece of iron running through the object with another marking nearby. Looks like an arrow. The object is very heavy. Probably solid brass. I'm really hoping to find out what this is. With all the markings on it you would think it would be identifiable.

Part of the shattered breech of a French muzzleloading rifle (M1857) later (1867) converted to cartridge with a Tabatiere breech (license built version of the Snyder breech). Tons of them were converted in Belgium to 12 gauge and sold as "ZULU" shotguns with both bronze or steel breeches. You have the reason there why steel was preferred.
