I dug this along a tidal river in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. It is made of brass and was attached to another brass piece with what looks like copper rivets that were hammered on both sides or possibly soldered with copper.

There were many homes along the water in the 1700s and I have found relics from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. There was also ship building in the area and I have dug copper nails and copper sheeting at that spot.
 

It's the attachment for the handle of a brass bucket.
I'll look for a picture and attach soon.

Hello DND. I think HuntinDog is right...nice find, it's looks old and has an interesting shape. I'd keep it.
