Hi all I was going through some of my older finds. This one was never solved. This appears to look like a rosette or something similar. It is brass/bronze and has a couple of broken off mount points on the back. Beside it is another oval sort of badge. Due to the star on the heart shaped one I was thinking maybe military so I researched military rosette with no luck. Any thoughts on these thank you.

Maybe a martingale. Do a Google image search for "martingale heart" and you'll see some examples. Probably civilian.

Excellent, thank you. Since I found them in an area where very rich people rode horses in the Victorian era what you say would make perfect sense. I'll update this if I find any more info. Thanks for you quick response.

There are confederate Civil War rosettes that are an embossed heart on a circular rosette... But I have never seen a heart shaped one with a star.

Google "confederate heart rosette".

Good idea on the back pictures. Here are some better pictures of it. I did some research on martingale and the confederate rosette and it sure looks like them. I can't find one with a star on it like mine. On the oval one there is certainly black paint on the back and a few fragments of it on the front. I'll keep looking and I appreciate you getting me on the right track.

I haven't seen that method of attaching a rosette. I think it might be some sort of buckle application.

It does look like a buckle there seems to be leather under the rivet on the right which would support that theory

Yah so maybe it is part of a fancy horse tack that a wealthy person owned. If I happen to find out exactly what it is I'll let you all know. Thank you for the ideas.
