Heart shaped "double pinned" item with Eagle and Shield on it

Someone suggested a suspender clip of some type, but I think that is a stretch, but who knows, it is without a doubt a double pinned item, but the circular hole is a clue I imagine and as far as age, I will go with early to mid 1800's. Found at same homestead as my WN button, snowflake encased cufflink and my other unknown relic that I posted today.

Not sure what it is Don but the way the metal "arms" are fastened at the bottom, it appears they are squeezed together to come out and then looped over something then refastened. Some type of removeable insignia? That's about all I can suggest.

Yes Wes, they do that, press together and swing out , then the two pins definitely went into something and the center hole plays a part in the ID also. I guess. :)

I have been googling insignias, medal, medallions, CW, War of 1812, GAR, reunion thingys and so far struck out, there is a reply on another forum where someone found an indentical one, but it is broken off and he is the one that was told it might be part of some type of suspender clip. I have many many clips and none are as beefy as this nor have a pin for attaching, yet alone two pins.

Don...

The way those clips work are just like the Bianchi Holster I used to carry my 9mm in.

The two clips were sqeezed together to release or lock the clip over a belt... in my case, a military web belt.

I can see that being clipped over a belt, or possibly a sash.

Do you think the "hole" at the bottom looks worn at all?

If there is wear on the bottom hole it is not very evident, the clips are pins, meaning they are very sharp, for pen tetrating thru cloth in my opinion, but they are not very strong, they have a springy give if you know what I mean.

Ah, nothing like these easy ones. :) Give me a button any day. :)

The fastener reminds me of the fabric panel wall clips that are used in cubicles. I would imagine this would use the same concept to fasten to clothing or a piece of leather. Maybe harness strap decor?

Don,
One thing I have noticed...Every military piece has the Eagle clutching arrows in the left claw...Yours seems to be on the right...I am leaning that your 'What's It" is not military...Or at least not "Genuine Military Issue"...

The "Eyelet/Hollow rivet I feel is a crucial piece of the puzzle...It is there for a reason and it looks like it held something of "thickness"...

Nick

Nick, not looking at official military, since I think the fancy design on the heart eliminates that, but military related (perhaps special occasion dress) or patriotic due to the Eagle and shield.

You are not correct on your arrows in the talon statement, there are buttons with the eagle facing same direction with wings up and olive branch and arrows in the same talons. (See photos)

The first thing I looked at were the button books for similar eagles to help determine the era of the object. That is why I said as early as around 1800, or more like 1808 at the earliest, but the style continued off and on for many decades.

Now what would have been cool is for this heart thingy to have been on the photo of the young gentleman. Afterall, this was found at the closest homestead , and only one within a half mile of where the portrait was found. 8)

I stand Corrected...Thanks Don...All part of the learning curve...

I'll keep looking...can I get an estimate on how "thick" the material would have been on the eyelet end...

Nick

The eyelet is .15 inches or 4mm thick

On the topic of eagles & shields...

The eagle and shield motif was extremely popular for the era... it made it's way to signs, watches, buckles of all sorts, embroidery patterns, blankets, curtins, paintings, product advertisements, non-military buttons, pics, shields, crests, etchings, and carvings of all sorts.

IMHO the majority of "eagle" stuff is non-military.

I have one similar and thought that it was a young girls hair holder with a ribbon held by the rivet. Our, stuck into the back of a hat with ribbon.

Re: Heart shaped "double pinned" item with Eagle and Shield on it

Well the What is it is solved, here is the patent information, and if you read, it could be used for horse harness and as a buckle eleswhere, evidently it did not catch on, since Civil War suspender clips were a bit different. So, this is an 1850's era suspender buckle, that would have to be considered a partriotic one I guess.....

Here is the first patent he applied for in 1849, sorry for the small size, too late in the day and it has been a long day. :)

I posted mine to you yesterday Don, thanks for the ID. Ironicly, today, I found this which I assume is a newer version? Sorry about the pic, my cam is on the lamb.
