sounds like a good suggestion. I will check it out to see if I can get an approx age. I am gonna google it now!

Yup! Great ID Nickster.

Lead filled back, brass rosette (for horse tack)... :) Thats a great relic!

Thanks for the help. I have googled the item and it seems as if they are still made today. I do not have the age of the piece. I think it must be old because the heart shape is a little uneven. I figured today if they were machined they would all be even. Gotta still do some checking!

I have gone through my relic books and so far I haven't found it, but I do feel strongly that I have seen a picture of that before. I concur with the identification of rosette but I have a feeling it may go back to the civil war era or before. I have found the rosettes with lead filled back and the appearance of iron on it also. My question was were these before, during or after the war. Either way it is a nice piece to add to your collection.

I found this in one of my Civil War relic books. It is very similiar to the one you have.

Yes it looks very similar! Minus the holes. I never thought it to be that old, but if it is that would be great. Does you book have a pic of the back?

Sorry no pic's of the back. I believe the one in the book had it's fastening device broke off, thus leading them to make the holes in it for attaching it back.
