Heart breaker of the year!

Maybe ever , I went out after work yesterday and caught a super low tide. First I found this jasper piece which I was sure was gonna be a nice blade until I pulled it all the way out. I think it's an unfinished blade but also would make a razor sharp scraper.

And than on the way back I decided to take one more pass on an area that is nothing but bricks from old building that are covered by water now and found this ....... Biggest blade Iv ever found I really never expected to find anything this size around here. I looked for 45 min for the rest of it and honestly will prob spend rest of the year trying to find it.


If anybody has any guess for type or time period for it please let me know. Also it looks like there's less build up on the edge where it's broke than rest of blade so hopefully that means it's a recent break and I can find the rest.

With that chipping up on that jasper chunk it probably got your heart pumping. Good luck on the knife tip, that really pumped you up I'll bet!

Yea jasper fooled me pretty bad and I'm really hoping I can find rest of the blade here's what I'm looking thru to find it..... Gonna be tough

Thanks , you have any guesses on type or time period for the blade? I'm having trouble finding what it would be I was hoping somebody would know or have a guess. When you were around here did you find anything similar ?

Crude and worn, but that thing would have been huge! I probably would never spot anything that big because I'm so used to find tiny little points.

Yea that is similar ..... That a bead in there ? That's pretty cool I haven't found one yet. With the large flake patterns on the blade I found I'm hoping that helps narrow down a time period I'm gonna spend some time researching and hopefully narrow it down.

Cool finds ! That worked jasper cobble sure looked enticing insitu. The larger blade piece looks to be made of that ferruginous quartzite material, which doesn't surprise me. I am a bit lower on the shore than you are, and if I find anything of significant size around here it is usually of that material, or occasionaly some imported rhyolite. Most of the ferruginous quartzite artifacts I have seen are straight and constricting stem points, Bare Island and Poplar Island types, although I have also found a few relatively large and crude, thick side notched points that I would also consider to be mid to late archaic in time frame. I think all of the points I have seen from that material were meant for heavy duty work, and if I had to guess, I would estimate them to be roughly 2000-4000 BC ?
Have you metal detected through those bricks yet?

In my neck of the woods i would call that broken one a knife from the Fox Creek point era. It may look crude now , but that is because the material it is made of (Argillite) is erodes easily. Here is a pic of a similar one i found

Thanks for info the style and material are similar I’ll have to do some research on Fox Creek.
