According to AKG web page they are rated at 55 ohms impedance and are designed for hi-fidelity audio in a studio environment where background sound is limited. They are of an open back design, hence the studio environment use. They are overkill for MD'ing IMHO and wouldn't hold up to outdoor environment variables. Way too nice to be used for outdoors and on a device that outputs simple tones!

Could anyone tell me how these headphones would work for metal detecting? AKG K240.
They're 4 - 600 ohms.
They are clear as a bell but a touch too loud. I've had em they're around 15 to 20 yrs old or more.
Thanks, Mike in NJ

I've got a pair of these and use them with my old Compass Magnum 420. If you use a newer machine with lots of bells an whistles, then you may not need the superior quality that the AKG's offer. But if your relying on the slightest difference in tones, without a fancy digital display to reinforce your audio signal, there isn't going to be much better. When your finished detecting for the day, or if you get rained out, you can always kick back and listen to some tunes using your studio quality AKG's. (Just don't get them wet.)
