Head Hunter pulse?

Sadly the DP Pulse is no longer made and there are no plans to bring it back. I used both and tell you that in my opinion the DP beat the Whites hands down. The DP was more sensitive, lighter, and had a coil that didn't try to bob on the surface. The only downside of the DP was that it bled two 9 volts completely dry within 8 hours. I wish I still had mine (foolishly sold it)!

It isn't made anymore because Smudge was the only person that bought and liked it.

It's not made anymore because the fellow who made the coils passed away. The coils were specially made to an inductance of 1 millihenry and a resistance of 10 ohms. I have 3 of them and one has a special coil made by Eric Foster and modded by Mr. Bill Crabtree. I bought several of the cable connectors from Gary Storm and if I find a coil maker capable of building to that standard I will have them made. I also use Lithium ion rechargeable 9 volt batteries 600 mah. Been using them for years. I told Gary about them years ago.

From what I have heard that was a great machine. I had a Surf PI modded by Bill Crabtree. It was really good on the small gold. Have a dual field and it works well but can't compare it to the Head Hunter as I never used one.

Didn't know they stopped making them. From what I've seen and heard, they're awesome.

I know someone who make better coil or as good than the fosters it is in france pm me if you want one

Does it meet the specifications outlined by ROBOTCOP above? If not then it's a no-go right off the bat.

I have a Headhunter Pulse with the 11" white coil. . When I first got it I loved it although it was a little annoying when set at the threshold It sounded like a siren but it didnt false.. It worked great around saltwater and had very good depth. I made the mistake of putting my head underwater for the first time and it sizzled the electronics losing all my depth and I no longer had a threshold setting. Thats when my problems began. I had to send it back to the factory twice and they said they could find nothing wrong. This was unacceptable. The threshold knob did nothing and they could find nothing wrong?? Finally they agreed to replace the electronics. Now it works but its extremely erratic. But I use it because its all I have and I came to the conclusion that was the best they could do..

Someone suggested to me that I should change to a smaller 8" coil and maybe it wouldn't be so erratic but I guess they dont sell them anymore. My unit is like brand new. I like it but the constant falsing is annoying and its hard to distinguish a real signal from a false one unless I keep passing over the target. A real target will actually go silent for a split second and this is sometimes the method I use. But the depth is good and its not affected by saltwater. I use it surf only because the ear cups wont stay shut. They sometimes fall apart carrying from my car to the beach.

My question does anybody know where I can buy the smaller detectorpro 8" coil and a set or 2 of cable connectors?

I have never seen a coil pop up by itself but have seen complete units come up from time to time.

The connectors are specific to Detector Pro and I bought a set from Gary Storm at DP and they are about $120 each. I've had repairs done by them from loose connection fix to a total board replacement on a second unit.

With a 11 inch coil the best settings I can run is the Tuning knob at about 1 o'clock and the frequency knob at 4 o'clock. Beyond that it gets erratic. When the coil is underwater keep it at a constant level.

If you lift it just a little bit you will get a false signal. At these settings I think you're running it pretty hot.

I use rechargeable Li-ion 9v batteries 600 mah. Been using them for years now, good for 1,000 recharges. Got them from Horizon Battery.

The 8 inch coils are rare. I like the 11's.

I'm curious what settings you use? I think with the 11 inch coil you can't run the full frequency. It's too hot a coil.

I'm going to get those batteries you use. I bought some regular 9v and they can get expensive.

This thread points to the basic problem with the Head Hunter, erratic, too hot, like most Fords you need to "Fix Or Repair Daily," and there are better, easier to use PI's on the beach now. A $580.00 8" Tesoro Sand Shark will run with a Head Hunter all day long, so bring your sack lunch. And while your machine is being repaired, that Sand Shark will be making money on the beach! :skullflag:

Its been a while since I have used it so I will have to get back with you. I dont look at the knob position, i like to set it by ear like I do with any other unit. I like the set the threshold as high as I can for depth, just out of range of my hearing. I cannot sweep the coil to the left or right. I have to keep it very steady and move forward very carefully. I replaced the bolts on my shaft to try and remove any slack. I can turn the threshold down, and it seems better but i loose a lot of depth.

If you lift it just a little bit you will get a false signal.
Shouldnt you be able to move a coil a little bit without constant falsing? Thanks for the reply. You are the first person that I have talked with that may be experiencing the same constant falsing.

OldGold1974 sent me a complete DetectorPro without the shaft and an 8 inch coil from the Virgin Islands because he didnt want it anymore. Here is his post. .Quote

Cheers

I was very grateful for the free unit but unfortunately the wire was all rotten. It appears he got some use out of his or he forgot to wash the salt off of it. Mine still looks brand new because I rarely use it. Here is what the wire looked like when it arrived. Its even worse now. Is there any way I can fix this coil? Should I attempt to cut open the coil casing?

I believe I've seen OBN repair a coil that was damaged in a similar fashion (on an Excal). I believe he cut around the fitting from the top, spliced in a new cable, put a new fitting on then epoxied over the splice.

Have you hooked the 8" up to see if it makes any difference from the 11"?

No I havent tried to splice it together because the wire is so rotten. It just started falling apart. I have it packed away in a box. Maybe I dig it out and try again. I dont even know how to do the splice
