The bronze age barrow has long since vanished, probably in the Victorian period, although the ring ditch is still visible on some aerial shots.
This field has been kind to us in the past & as it was ploughed up until recent years, anything could & has turned up. An exciting prospect when the next dig could be any period of British history! (although we have yet to get any Bronze Age or Iron Age)

Even after the recent rain, the soil was like cement but with stones! If I could jump up & down & dig an inch I was lucky. (my feet still hurt) Therefore, we only did 2.5 hours today:

3 Scrappies
2 Hammered - Lizzy I Penny & Henry III cut halfpenny(broken)
1 button:laughing7:
Tudor Belt Mount
Large blank horse rosette
17th C Halfpenny Token
1694 W&M Halfpenny
RARE - 5-6th C AD Germanic import (migration period) Supporting Arm Brooch:headbang: Only about 30 recorded on the UK databases, & pretty rare in Germany, I would guess?

A very productive short hunt & well worth bruising the feet.

As usual, some really interesting finds. I always enjoy your posts. Love the way you are able to tell us what you found.

It seems like you could dig up the oddest, most obscure thing and somehow know exactly what it is. :laughing7: Great finds!

I think you did very well for 2.5 hours.
Congrats on fantastic and rare find.

I'd take that 2hr hunt of finds any day out in the fields.

GREAT digs! The brooch is the star, but the hammered coins are great too!

Cheers,

Buck

Without being too big headed, I knew as soon as I dug it. Well I knew it was Saxon by the unusual pin mechanism, although I waivered a little between that & a strange Roman type. What I never guessed in the field was it's rarity. Although it's now another ID locked in my psyche.

Silver and a great brooch, that's what I call a great hunt!
Congratulations

wonderful finds, as always, Crusader. I'm curious about the supporting arm brooch and have not been able to find any other references to it. Can you tell us anything else about it?

A little background.

Basically after the Romans left Britain in AD 410, they left a power vacuum. The Germanic (warlike) tribes took advantage of this. Although they also settled & farmed/inter-breed with the local population. These 200 years, called the migration period, saw very little mass pottery production & NO COINAGE. However, they did bring with them art & jewelry & skilled craftsmen. This brooch was an import during this period, which many call the 'Dark Ages'. Really it was full of trade & farming but its mostly lost in our archeaological record because it was leather & wood. (plus some amazing gold etc!)

That was an outstanding hunt for just 2.5 hours. You guys just keep churning out the finds (including more hammereds!). Keep 'em coming.

Interestingly we checked our records for this field last year & we had 0 hammered at all. This year I hit the first one after 10 minutes!
