Read this some place and found it to be true while using my 250. While pin pointing a shallow target (0-2") use the front of the inner circle of the coil. When the target is deeper use the center of the inner coil.

Below is how someone else put it!!!! (found it in my notes on the ace 250)

Practice pinpointing, as it is a little different. The "hotspot" is the center, front tip of the inside oval on the coil. It almost pinpoints like a DD coil. Just scan side to side to center the target then drag the coil straight back until the instant the signal stops and your target will be right there. If you have trouble with a target turn ninety degrees to the target and scan it again and you'll hit it right on. On deep targets the hotspot will move back from the tip of the inside oval a bit. Garrett has an animated diagram on their site that gives a general idea on
pinpointing.

Hope this helps
Mike

Hi Gulf ! Welcome to the forums !

First, I want to compliment your pic of the Garrett 6.5 x 9 Proformance coil ! You are going to make a great poster here !

Follow this route on your computer and you will have all the written stuff anyone could want on how to pinpoint, detune, or anything else with the Ace250.......the rest is just practice with the machine, to hone your proficiency. I suggest that, unless you have a photographic memory, printout this page before starting.

(Modified Edition....as of today Sept. 01, 2007)
#1) Go to the Garrett website www.garrett.com and when you get there, click on the Hobby Division photo.

#2) When you are on the Hobby Division page, click on "Technical Support" , listed on the left side of the page.

#3) When you get to that page, there is a little search window at the top-right of the page, so type "pinpointing" into that window and click the GO button. This takes you to a links page.

#4) When you are on the links page, click on the link titled "Welcome to Garrett.com.

#5) After you get on the page from above step #4, you will see two click-on's for the Ace250, one titled "Using The Pinpoint Mode" and the other "Pinpointing Shallow or Irregular Targets" (And a third for the Ace150, but that's not for this session.). After you have assimilated this information, then go on to next step #6, to learn about "detuning" to narrow down the exact location of your target....eliminates unnecessary digging and faster target recovery, allowing you to move on to the next find !

#6) When you are finished with the last of the two pages mentioned at step #5 above, go to the little search window at the top-right of the page and type "detuning" into the little search window and click GO. This will take you to a links page and you want to click-on the link titled "Welcome to Garrett.com" Alternately, you could get on this site by using your search engine of choice and the following address: http://www.garrett.com/hobby/reviews.asp?pid=1139070wne

This takes you to an article within the Garrett website written by Ben Myers, i.e. a product report on the Ace250 he tested, and is another great information resource. Now, when you get there, you can either begin reading that first page, etc., etc., or go directly to the "detuning" information by scrolling to the bottom of the page and clicking on page 2. Then go to the bottom of page 2 and read under the subtitle "PWR & Pinpoint"......it talks about detuning and how it is performed.

That's it ! ;D ...Having read all of that info., now you're an expert....go get'em tiger !

Thanks Mike and Todd. Ive been having a bit of trouble pinpointing myself.

You and me both!
It does take some getting used to. Garrett needs to redo the DVD istructions for pinpointing and make the same edition to the manual. Yes, the "sweet spot" as it is called is the center front tip of the coil. I use my 4.5 sniper coil becaue I don't have that problem pin-pointing, also it cuts through the trash real good. Don't worry. You'll get it.

Regards
Robert

I even bought a hand-held pinpointer. I still dig a large hole. I have been thinking about buying the sniper coil.

I want to thank everyone for responding to my problem. I did a expieriment last night to try to narrow it down myself. Take a look and see if you are having similar results. John

Gulfcapt25.......Very creative and nice pics.... WTG !

What did you think of the Garrett website, and have you tried the "detuning" yet ? If so, any luck with that ? I still have trouble getting the detuning method to work consistently......maybe one time in five tries........stresses me out ! Seems to me like the timing when releasing/pressing the PP button is very critical. What's your take on that ?

Thanks....Todd ;D

Dear friends,

Any one who may have copied my 6-step route to pinpointing & detuning information on the Garrett website (Thread Reply #3), this is to let you all know that it has been Modified to improve accuracy. I did a trial run today, and it now reads and works perfectly ! Ummmmmm ::)....hope I don't have to eat those words !

Please replace any copies (sheets or computer files) with this latest edition.

Sorry for any inconvenience caused. :-[
