I think it was a two piece button. The back of it is missing, so I'm not 100% sure.

I have no Idea, but a lot of button experts frequent this section.
You may want to post a pic of the back, I'm sure someone will ask.
Nice find by the way.

Yes, it looks like Mercury, but it could also be Minerva. Does it attract a magnet? Neat find, Breezie

Yes, it looks like Mercury, but it could also be Minerva. Those types of button are known as 'pictorial' buttons. Does it attract a magnet? Neat find, Breezie

Doesn't attract a magnet.

Since it doesn't attract a magnet, it maybe made of brass. You might want to GOOGLE 2 pc. pictorial buttons to see if you can find a close match. :) Breezie

It looks like a patriot. I have never seen this button and it looks interesting. The only thing I can say that may help is that it appears to have been a 2 piece button and the back may have rusted off. I am told that thin ferrous button backs usually signify 20th century (if its a button and if the back was ferrous).

Tinned iron back 2 piece buttons were manufactured in the 1800s but the metal was much thicker and didnt rust away so easily. A rusted away steel back brass face button usually means 20th century.

I believe it is Mercury. I thought it was a patriot when I first found it, but the man has wings on his helmet. I believe it is 1800s because of the Indian heads that I've found in the area.

Do you see any remains of a steel back or rust? I think the only way it could be late 1800s civilian is if a brass back seperated and fell off.

Heres Minerva with wings. Hard to judge the size but yours looks larger than a quarter.
(yours)looks like a large fashion button.
